Why you legally need to review health and safety policies.
The legal requirement to write a policy is included in the Health and Safety at Work Act. If you have five or more employees, you must write your policy down.
Personal safety devices/apps are a control measure implemented to reduce the impact of the risks that you have determined could have an impact on your employees.
As Peoplesafe changes the way your business manages health and safety, you must update existing policies to reflect this, or write one.
A health and safety policy sets out your general approach to health and safety. It explains how you, as an employer, will manage health and safety in your business. It should clearly say who does what, when and how. - Source - The HSE in how to prepare a health and safety policy.
Having clear expectations of how personal safety technology should be used by employees and monitored by managers as well as outlining the responsibilities of other people across your business will ensure the highest adoption rates.
Personal safety technology is not just for lone workers, but is most commonly used to help those that work alone. We recommend still providing Peoplesafe to high risk employees even if they aren't alone. If you do, you should review other H&S policies to include guidance.
The HSE defines a lone worker as ‘someone who works by themselves without close or direct supervision’. HSE guidance states that you must put clear procedures in place because effective means of communication are essential.
