Incident Reporting

Findings revealed that 60% of respondents have never reported any of their experiences of harassment to their employer.

This is due to various reasons, from employees not knowing how to report harassment, to employers discouraging formal reporting. One female respondent said

“I was told it wasn’t a crime so never officially reported it”

In some instances, employers were responsible for victims failing to escalate reports of harassment to the police.

Another respondent said that they “just made me fill in a report, no action taken”.

Incident Reporting

It is crucial for employees and employers to report incidences of harassment when they occur, as they are often part of a wider pattern of behaviour that can be used by police to identify repeat perpetrators and escalation of behaviours.

However the majority of respondents who had been harassed whilst working or travelling to work in the nighttime economy had not reported their experiences to the police. Whilst some respondents cited police inaction:

“I reported but gave up as nothing was done”.

Other responses reflect this lack of confidence in employers to take action when harassment is experienced. This suggests that employees may not feel that their experiences of harassment are worth reporting

Failure to report and prosecute behaviours creates an unsafe working environment, perpetuating a culture of harassment within the workplace.
