This campaign echoes the findings of the Suzy Lamplugh Trust and Peoplesafe. Employers must do more to ensure their staff get home safely.
So far, the campaign has already been backed by councils in Sheffield, Newcastle, Edinburgh, East Dunbartonshire, North Ayrshire, Falkirk, Dundee and most recently, Glasgow. Here, workers and employers are already starting to see the benefits of safe and accessible transport home.
Anthony Carroll, a city councillor who put forward the motion, said he had been contacted by bar workers who had felt unsafe waiting for a taxi alone in the city centre after work. He further stated that the campaign and motion “hopes to bring a duty of care for night-time workers to the forefront of the night-time economy".
Touching on the need for a change in attitude from employers, he added “We need to reshape our culture of harassment and abuse that is endemic within the sector”.
